about

I started composing around the same time I began playing jazz roughly 6 years ago. I would not have become the musician I am today had composing not influenced my creative thought process. My goal for Old Horizons is to create a snapshot of where I am today as well as what I want to strive for and improve upon in the future as a jazz musician.

To maintain that old-school “live session” feeling I was aiming for, we all played in the same room and most of the tracks were completed in one take. As opposed to trying to craft a “perfect” sounding album, I wanted to capture something that sounds real and kept true to the roots of the music. Something that kept the grittiness, the mistakes, the on-the-spot learning, and the sound of the streets. These 12 original compositions reflect a variety of influences I’ve had from a compositional standpoint, such as Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Thad Jones, Duke Ellington, Wayne Shorter, The Jazz Messengers, Charles Mingus, as well as my own conclusions that I’ve developed over the course of my musical path.

My ideas could not have been fully realized had I not brought together the brilliant and hard-working musicians that I specifically chose for this album. What they brought to the table in terms of conceptual contrast as well as the individuality of how they treat their instruments is the exact reason why I could not see anyone else filling their roles. If even one member wasn’t available, the album would not have been made. I hope you enjoy their excellence as much as I did during the process. I would also like to give a special thanks to David Berry for planting the idea and encouraging me to create this album in the first place. Thank you for listening!
